Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?
With pollution wrecking havoc in our lives, the spotlight is on diesel vehicles to cut down on emissions. This has led several diesel-engine vehicle manufacturers to look for alternative means of cutting down on emissions. One such solution is diesel exhaust fuel or DEF with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). For those who are still new this technology, keep reading this article to know more.
1. What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid ?
Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF is a non-toxic solution consisting of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. It is used in the exhaust stream of the diesel vehicles which enables it to break down harmful Nitrogen Oxide emissions into Nitrogen and Water.DEF does not come in contact with diesel, it is placed in a separate tank in the diesel vehicles. This arrangement can be seen in vehicle models of 2010 and later.
2. Where can I buy DEF from ?
You can buy diesel exhaust fluid easily in India. Some of the manufacturers including Inabgo DEF are Tata Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Tata Truck Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Benz Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Bharatbenz Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Bharat Benz Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Mahindra Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Cummins Diesel Exhaust Fluid etc.
You can also buy bulk diesel exhaust fluid.DEF Diesel Exhaust fluid is usually stored in a separate tank in vehicles, usually with a blue filter cap. You can buy DEF in jugs at pumps or ask the supplier to deliver it to you.
Why is Inabgo DEF is better than other DEF available in the market ?
- Inabgo is meticulously manufactured only with Highly pure Raw material.
- Inabgo is prepared by using only Ultra Pure De-Ionized water which complies to Pharmaceutical grade water.
- Inabgo ensure quality standards which are better than those specified in ISO 22241 (ISO-22241-1, ISO-22241-2, ISO-22241-3) specifications which is the industry standard.
- Inabgo give COA (Certificate of Analysis) with every batch that is dispatched, which ensures easy traceability.

3. How much Diesel Exhaust Fluid would be required by a truck ?
The consumption of DEF is determined by the dosing rate or the treat rate. For instance if your truck has a dosing rate of 2-3%, it means that the truck has a fuel efficiency of 6 miles per gallon. With a dosing rate of 3%, it will consume around 1 gallon of DEF per 200 miles.
It is recommended that you purchase the DEF from reputed companies. Check how Inabgo DEF is better than other DEF manufacturers like Mahindra Blaze Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Eicher Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Volvo Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Scania Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Leyland Diesel Exhaust Fluid,Ashok Leyland Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Valvoline Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Gulf Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Cummins Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Gulf Oil Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
4. Is DEF corrosive ?
The best diesel exhaust fluid is non-dangerous. In fact, when compared to the other fluids used in a heavy-duty vehicle such as engine oil, diesel, windscreen wash, antifreeze, etc, diesel engine fluid is the least toxic. It may however corrode metals such as aluminum, copper, carbon steel and Zinc. Therefore, it is recommended that you do not store DEF in containers made up of these materials. You should consult your supplier before storing it.
5. How will the SCR technology affect the performance of a vehicle ?
Firstly, SCR (Selective catalytic reduction ) is an after treatment technology in which the emissions are taken care of outside the engine. SCR is aimed at improving fuel efficiency and increase torque. It enables manufacturers to tune engines in a better way.
It is advised that you select reputed DEF’s for your vehicle such as Blue Diesel Exhaust Fluid or Air1 Diesel Exhaust Fluid. These are highly stable, colorless and odorless DEFs that meet international standards.
6. Will there be enough fuel saving in vehicles after using SCR ?
Diesel exhaust fluid with SCR technology enables DEF manufacturers to tune engines to improve its performance and save fuel. According to fleet’s experiences with heavy-duty trucks post 2010 is that there was a fuel savings of around 5% compared 2007 models. Also, reports from customers using SCR on off-road machines reported 5% or more savings in fuel.
7. How long can I store diesel exhaust fluid ?
Normally, Diesel Exhaust Fluid has a shelf life of two years. It is imperative that you DEFs having an expiry date and in case you have a DEF that has outlived its shelf life then you must contact your supplier.
Diesel exhaust fluid must be kept away from direct sunlight and ensure that it is kept in a place having a temperature of less than 30 degrees.
8. What if the DEF tank is filled with diesel ? What are its dangers ?
Firstly, remember that there are enough safety measures taken to ensure that there is no confusion between the diesel tank and the DEF tank. The diameter of a diesel nozzle is 0.87 inches compared to 0.75inches of the DEF tank. This prevents the diesel nozzle from being inserted into the diesel exhaust fluid tank. Also, the DEF tank will be blue in colour and have ‘DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID’ clearly written on it along with an ISO standard number.
Although there are very less chances of any DEFs being filled with diesel, if it does happen, it can damage the SCR system. In such cases it is recommended that you not drive the vehicle and instead consult your supplier immediately.
In case the diesel tank gets filled with DEF, the engine will stop running immediately. You will have to take your vehicle to a service station immediately for repairs.
